Eritrean Landscape
Eritrea, off the main tourist circuit, boasts pristine beauty, ancient civilizations and modern amenities--- packaged with a climate to your taste. Eritrea offers the latest and most distinctive destination for the discerning tourist. The youngest nation on the continent of Africa, with a history as old as humanity, it is a land of dramatic contrasts, rich traditions plus warm and welcoming people.
Eritrea is blessed with tranquil and unspoilt tropical beaches, verdant, fertile plains and hillsides, and starkly beautiful mountain ranges. It is an idyllic landscape replete with colourful wildlife, much of it unique to Eritrea.
Although tourism is still in its infancy, the opportunity to tour far from the maddening crowd, to investigate undocumented ancient monuments, trek or drive through unspoilt and spectacular landscapes, to dive in crystal clear waters or sail round uninhabited islands, is one not to be spurned but savoured as a rare delicacy.
Perched on a plateau in the highlands lies Asmara, Eritrea’s capital, which provides a relaxed and safe environment for exploring, shopping or simply sipping espresso at street cafés. Surrounding it are breathtaking views of towering mountains and dramatic ravines where tiny villages nestle in the folds.
The road connecting Asmara to the Red Sea port of Massawa, is famed for passing through terrain so diverse that visitors traveling along it can 'experience
three seasons in three hours'. Driving along this Africa's finest highways, a
masterpiece of bold, modern engineering, you descend 7,400 ft. in less than 70
miles to arrive at Massawa. On the way you will feel and see gradual yet
startling climate changes, from the cool highlands of Asmara the temperature
steadily increases, the vegetation changing accordingly too, to reach its
climax at the Pearl of the Red Sea, a holiday resort with shimmering turquoise
waters, coral reefs, sun-bleached beaches and a background of palms, mosques, and minarets. On arrival at Massawa you have time for a welcome swim in the sea, followed by a luncheon.
Most of the following pictures show scenes of the eastern escarpment where the road connecting Asmara and Massawa passes through,
western escarpment known as semenawi bahri, the plains of Denkalia, Eritrean plateau and the endless Savannah of western Eritrea that stretches north into Sudan.
